Perry Yoder Visit

Zion Mennonite Peace and Justice group is planning and organizing a 6-week peace and justice teaching tour of the Pacific Northwest Mennonite Conference by Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary O. T. Professor Emeritus Perry Yoder. Perry and his wife Elizabeth grew up in the Willamette Valley and are graduates of Western Mennonite School is Salem, Oregon. This page will document the details of their visits to the different areas of our conference as plans develop. A calendar of events provides a snapshot of their visit.


September 29 - October 1, Seattle, WA

Understanding God’s vengeance in its scriptual context and its relationship to a God of justice.

These psalms have important teachings about the response of victims of violence and the notion of God as a God of the powerless.

What does it take for there to be peace? The linkage to justice as the foundation of peace is basic.

If God was able to forgive sins in the Old Testament without the death of His son, what happened in the first century AD so that he could no longer do so?
  3:30  Closing Worship
Sessions will include:
  • teaching by Perry,
  • opportunities for dialogue in small groups, and
  • opportunities to ask Perry questions
Peace and Justice groups meet, 4:30pm to 7:00pm
Area Peace and Justice groups are invited to meet with Perry with a peace potluck at 5:30.
  4:30  Prophets and Political activism.
What was the prophetic agenda for change and how was it to be brought about. We will refer to the book by John Howard Yoder, The Christian Witness to the State in the course of this session. We will also discuss the polarities in the Mennonite peace community concerning what we can demand of the state and the role of the Christian in the state.
